Happy New Year and welcome to 2020! I hope you had a terrific break over Christmas and enjoyed time out with family and friends. State Parliament recommences this week and it will be an interesting time until the important Queensland State election which will be held on Saturday 31st October 2020.
In the meantime, a by-election for the seat of Currumbin will be held most likely in March following the resignation for health reasons of the current member Jann Stuckey, of the Liberal National Party. It is a litmus test for the Government in an election year and local barrister and young mum of two Laura Gerber will seek to replace Jann Stuckey as the member for Currumbin for the LNP. I wish Laura well.
Local Government Election
In what will be a year chock full of elections including the U.S. Presidential election 3 days after the Qld State election, the Gold Coast City Council election will be held on the 28th March. Current Mayor Tom Tate is running again and from a business perspective has been a great supporter for the prosperity of the city. With many changes to the internal divisional boundaries and the retirement of some long-term stalwarts of local government on the Gold Coast it is imperative that we elect city representatives who recognise the importance of economic prosperity of the Gold Coast in their election platforms.
The Queensland State Budget will be brought down early this year by the Palaszczuk Labor Government on the 28 April and I can guarantee it will not be good news for business in Queensland. Already they have flagged raiding the public servant's superannuation fund and I am sure taxes and charges will be in for a hike to avoid a credit downgrade of the Government in an election year. They have also given plenty of time before the October election for the flack from a bad news budget to die down in their politically conniving modus operandi.
However I am certain Queenslanders won't forgive or forget the dodgy behaviour of Deputy Premier and Treasurer Jacqui Trad and the failure of Annastacia Palaszczuk to discipline the Treasurer properly mainly because it is really the Treasurer and her powerful Left faction who is the actual determiner of Queensland direction.
Wishing everybody great success and prosperity in the year ahead.
