A message from Ray Stevens, State Member for Mermiad Beach, March 2017

The beginning of the Parliamentary year has commenced slowly with the Palaszczuk Labor Government continuing to try and justify their failure from the ongoing Queensland Rail debacle.  When the LNP ran Queensland Rail, the trains ran on time and with no cancellation of services.  The urgency of fixing our passenger trains is even more important to be ready for the Commonwealth Games.
Tourism and construction are still buoyant on the Gold Coast even though we have entered a traditionally quiet time.  Chinese and other Asian investment companies have fallen in love with the Gold Coast and they are contributing to our local building activity.

The redistribution by the Electoral Commission of Queensland (ECQ) embodies the most significant amendment to electoral boundaries in 30 years.  There are only minor changes to the existing Mermaid Beach Electorate boundaries and I will be contesting the seat of Mermaid Beach at the next election.  As the Member for Mermaid Beach since 2006, I will continue to work hard for my constituents and fight the good fight for safety (anti-bikies) families and the amenity of our thriving community. I am currently investigating Queensland's retail trading hours as Deputy Chair of the Finance and Administration Committee so any feedback would be most warmly welcomed.

Transport Commonwealth Games:  M1 and Light Rail

Local public transport service delivery could see some improvement particularly with the Commonwealth Games getting ever closer.  The M1 upgrade is a key local priority and we need this Palaszczuk Labor Government to ensure that a deal is done as soon as possible for local residents, our current visitors and those expected during the 2018 Commonwealth Games.

I will continue to push for an alternative highway to be built between Brisbane and the Gold Coast as users of the current M1 would be aware how regularly it chokes up.
The light rail provides the Gold Coast with an alternative mode of local public transport.  I sincerely hope that the construction of Stage 2, managed by this Palaszczuk Labor Government, connecting to the state heavy rail network, is completed in time to service the high influx of visitors our city will experience during the Commonwealth Games.
