On 12 November last year, the 'Tackling Alcohol-Fuelled Violence' legislation was introduced which aims to punish the majority for the actions of a minority by limiting trading hours, imposing lockout laws and banning shots and cocktails after midnight.
Last week the Committee investigating this Bill held a public hearing on the Gold Coast where it was heard first hand from local stakeholders including:
· Surfers Paradise Chillout Zone
· Surfers Paradise Licensed Venue Association
· Gold Coast Hospital and Health Service
· Queensland Police Service
The consistent theme of the submissions was that this legislation is a step backwards and is only a bandaid solution.
Everyone agrees that we must act to curb alcohol fuelled violence and that is why in Government, the LNP introduced the Safe Night Out Strategy creating tougher laws that crack down on those that misbehave while making a safer environment for the majority.
It has been more than a year since the election and the Gold Coast deserves better than a Labor Government holding our State back. Only the LNP has a real economic plan to unleash Queensland's potential.
