City of Gold Coast

RE: City of Gold Coast response to COVID-18 crisis

Dear Cr Tate,

I write following my various discussions with you, your office and the Council's Economic Development Team and also reference my letter to Council CEO Dale Dickon on 20 March 2020 which remains unanswered.

The current state of the Gold Coast business community is terminal. After a prolonged downturn which has suffocated our economy, the border opening while still uncertain will miss the school holiday window of opportunity for many businesses.

Business survival is now almost too far out of reach for many and the action and support from Council to date has frankly been almost non-existent and amassing as the elephant in the room for Chamber members.

Now is the time for Council to step up and help our 60,000 small businesses that are the backbone of our economy and play an incredibly important part in shaping the social fabric of our city as an emerging entrepreneurial hub.

With no major events to focus on, we ask that some of the monies from this area be passed directly to businesses that need it

We need more dynamic input and direction to counter other regional draw cards that are set to further hamstring us

We seek an extension of the waiving of fees and charges that have been a lifeline for many businesses beyond June 30

We want further dialogue in regard to the Economic Development department be reinstated as per our previous correspondence

We do however welcome the accelerated announcement of your industry specific stimulus package which includes local procurement and assistance across all sectors, and hope to soon hear of other initiatives the Council is planning

In seeking immediate Council support for business, we offer our full assistance in any way we can as the peak business body for the Gold Coast.

As always, I welcome the opportunity to meet and discuss further, however time is of critical importance to so many.

From the current chamber president to the former, please act now and help our business community survive.

Yours sincerely,

Martin Hall
