The Gold Coast's most influential business lobby group is pushing ahead with plans to change its name to Gold Coast Chamber of Commerce after a vote of members was stymied.
Gold Coast Central Chamber of Commerce president Martin Hall said the planned new name was more reflective of the group's membership and its influence in the region but not all business groups in the area agreed.

At a Special General Meeting held today members of the Gold Coast Central chamber voted overwhelmingly in favour of the name change but the motion was defeated.

The Gold Coast economy continues to outperform other parts of Queensland and Australia as it emerges as an economic powerhouse.
Gold Coast Central Chamber of Commerce president Martin Hall said the city now accounted for one in every 10 Queensland jobs and that were now more than 300,000 workers in the region.

"The Gold Coast's economic performance stands in stark contrast to other parts of the State where growth remains subdued in some areas and non-existent in other,'' said Mr Hall.

The Gold Coast's largest and most influential business lobby group, the Gold Coast Central Chamber of Commerce, is set to change its name to Gold Coast Chamber of Commerce after a vote of members planned for January 9 next year.

Chamber president Martin Hall said the new name was more reflective of the group's membership and its influence in the region.
"The change of name from Central Chamber to just Gold Coast Chamber of Commerce is really nothing more than a change in business name,'' said Mr Hall.

Small and medium businesses drive the Gold Coast economy and employ thousands of people. As your local MP, I am committed to ensuring we do everything we can to support
you, as your hard work and success of your business means our city's economy grows and creates more local jobs.

I know for many local businesses, one of their biggest frustrations is their struggle to access finance, often meaning they must put their own assets on the line. That's why last week, the
Liberal National Government announced a $2 billion Australian Businesses Securitisation Fund...

                The Return of Indy Cars!

Whilst the 2018 Gold Coast car races have been and gone, it is obvious as promoter extraordinaire and Gold Coast Suns Chairman Tony Cochrane says, that the race now needs a boost to maintain its interest and place on the Gold Coast tourism calendar. There is talk of trying to resurrect the Indy cars again but they left the Gold Coast leaving a bitter taste in the mouths of Queensland taxpayers. Perhaps something new like a Red Bull event or even shifting Formula 1 from Melbourne might be a new and exciting challenge. All we want is to k...

Small businesses will now pay les tax, sooner with the Coalition Government delivering its tax relief five years earlier than planned.

As you know lower company tax means you can invest more in to your business and create the jobs our city needs.

This means businesses with a turnover below $50 million will face a tax rate of just 25 per cent in 2021-22 rather than from 2026-27 as currently legislated. Similar timing changes will apply to the roll out of the 16 per cent tax discount for unincorporated businesses.

For example, a small business, such as an independent superma...

The Federal Government's 2018-19 Federal Budget offers a mixed bag for Gold Coast businesses according to the Gold Coast Central Chamber of Commerce.

Chamber president Martin Hall said the extension of the immediate $20,000 asset write-off for capital purchases was a strong incentive for small businesses to invest in assets for the future of the business.
Mr Hall said the personal tax cuts, while small, would help improve consumer confidence but the Chamber was disappointed the Federal Government had not displayed greater efforts to start reducing the deficit.

He said the Budge...

                OVERALL
The Gold Coast Central Chamber of Commerce is very supportive of the Commonwealth Games. However, as forecast, across the Gold Coast there have been some big winners and some others who are being left disappointed.

This has been the case at previous Olympic Games and Commonwealth Games. Based on previous Games, including London and Glasgow, some businesses will not perform as well as they might hope. This is because regular customers may want to avoid the crowds, people are being warned against travelling on the roads or because a percentage of residents have left the city...

The Opening Ceremony last night was sensational and made me proud to call the Gold Coast home.

We are supporting your investment and growth through the instant tax write off of assets purchased up to $20,000.

The Gold Coast is great city to live in and a great city in which to do business. The Gold Coast Bulletin's recent article about the price of car parking in the city being cheaper than other major cities around Australia highlights just one of our competitive advantages.

Convenient and inexpensive parking is essential to support businesses to contribute to the economy. According to Tourism and Events Queensland statistics, each year the Gold Coast plays play host to 6.8 million day-trippers. These day-trippers contribute more than $600 million to the Gold Co...

POSITIVE NEWS ON PENALTY RATES FOR SMALL BUSINESS
It was very good news for Gold Coast businesses when the Federal Court upheld the decision of the independent Fair Work Commission on penalty rates this week.

The Fair Work Commission sets award pay and conditions, including penalty rates, in the same way the Reserve Bank sets interest rates. They are an independent umpire.
In making its decision on penalty rates for some workers in the hospitality and retail industries, the Commission looked at all the evidence over a two-year period, held 39 days of hearings, received almost 6,...

One, it will cut the available car parking in Surfers Paradise and cut traders' livelihoods.

Two, the money the council will collect from the sale will be spent on the Green Bridge, which the Gold Coast Central Chamber of Commerce thinks will be a white elephant.

The Gold Coast Chamber of Commerce does not take this stance lightly. The Chamber believes that development is an essential part of growth that creates investment and employ...

As Mayor, I'm committed to ensuring our city is as prepared as possible for severe storms and other natural disasters. As a business community, we have a role to play in advocating emergency preparation to keep ourselves, our families, homes and businesses safe.
Knowing you have a disaster readiness plan in place for your home and your business will help minimise damage and facilitate faster recovery.

This year, some small businesses are partnering with City of Gold Coast to support disaster readiness. These stores sell many ...

The beginning of the Parliamentary year has commenced slowly with the Palaszczuk Labor Government continuing to try and justify their failure from the ongoing Queensland Rail debacle. When the LNP ran Queensland Rail, the trains ran on time and with no cancellation of services. The urgency of fixing our passenger trains is even more important to be ready for the Commonwealth Games.
Tourism and construction are still buoyant on the Gold Coast even though we have entered a traditionally quiet time. Chinese and other Asian investment companies have fallen in love with th...

The continued growth of the Gold Coast tourism industry presents many opportunities for locals.

This week I launched the China-Australia Year of Tourism, a Coalition initiative taken together with China that celebrates our relationship and recognises the significance of the Chinese tourism market to Australia.
This campaign will drive further growth in our largest tourism market and the Gold Coast stands to reap the benefits.

As the primary economic driver for many of our city's small businesses, there should be a lot of optimism in the local business community about the yea...

I hope you all had a great Christmas and New Year break and a successful start to the year.

It's been a busy few months holding the Labor Government to account in the portfolios of Communities, Women and Youth, Child Safety and the Prevention of Domestic and Family Violence and Disability Services and Seniors, as well as fighting hard for Mudgeeraba locals.

Unfortunately, when it comes to jobs for the Gold Coast, despite all the activity associated with the lead up to the Commonwealth Games, things have actually been getting tougher for Gold Coast job-seekers in the last 12 ...

Small businesses are an important cog in the machine that is the Queensland economy. They generate local jobs, provide vital services and products, and many are run by families who make a significant contribution to our community. That's why the LNP will always back small family-run businesses.

As a former small business owner, I know all too well the hard work that happens behind the scenes from crunching numbers, arranging rosters, to training staff. I also know that good Government decisions like cutting red tape, improving local infrastructure, and providing certainty can mak...

The purpose of this survey is to understand businesses experiences with late payments as well as trends and effects these have on small business.

They are interested to learn how businesses set payment times, the impacts on business and what actions you take in relation to late payments.

Results from this survey will inform...

From February 2017, the Queensland lockout laws will come into full effect and it is important that affected businesses are aware of their new responsibilities, as there are harsh penalties for breaches.

The Gold Coast Central Chamber of Commerce has previously voiced its opposition to these laws on the basis that they will hurt the Gold Coast's nighttime economy without enough evidence that they will improve safety.

The new laws have been in place since 1 July, but the lockout time will soon move two hours earlier, from 3am to 1am even within the safe night precincts - and ...

Small businesses are an integral part of the fabric of our society. As a former small business owner, I know that mum-and-dad business owners work incredibly hard at their businesses which create jobs for our kids and provide a boost to our economy. It was a busy month in Burleigh with The King of Burleigh Hill go kart racing over on Goodwin Terrace as part of Gold Coast Superfest celebrations. It was a great afternoon out with racing, live music and good food and of course, perfect Spring weather. I got to play starter, race timer and even wave the flag. It's wonderful to have major events like this in the electorate to showcase our beautiful landscapes.

There was also the Burleigh State School fete on in October. A late Friday afternoon event, it was well attended and there was plenty of fun to be had. The P&C Associat...

There's no doubt that Gold Coast locals and business owners are feeling a sense of optimism in the lead up to the Commonwealth Games in 2018. With recent infrastructure improvements, new projects, and an expected economic injection of $2 billion, we can't be blamed for feeling excited about the future of our City as we prepare for the Gold Coast to be projected onto the world stage.

Together with Gold Coast LNP MPs, I'm unashamedly pro-jobs, and am fighting to ensure that these Games are a gift that keeps on giving for the Gold Coast. Already we have seen significant priv...

IT is good to see that the Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk is now believed to be willing to allow an offshore cruise ship terminal from Main Beach, adjacent to Phillip Park.

We need to enjoy and make the most of our public spaces and The Spit is currently underutilised.
For years, when there have been news reports about development on this strip of land, it has revolved around The People vs. The Developers.

But are most people against development? This Chamber does not believe so.
The silent majority in favour of development at The Spit have been given a voice by retired Gold Coa...

There are more than 2.7 million small businesses around Australia.

There's no sector more important to growing the national economy than the small business sector and here on the Gold Coast, we know this to be true.

CHEVRON Island has become a major thoroughfare into Surfers Paradise, but it wasn't designed to play such a role.

Each day, Thomas Drive becomes gridlock, struggling under the demands put upon it by the ever increasing volume of traffic it hosts.

Long-term thinking is needed when proposals for new developments come before council.

There are around 14 planned for the area around Surfers Paradise, which could bring 10,000 new residents and make this traffic situation worse. There is a 21-storey tower on the drawing board for Chevron Island itself.

                Road projects to bust congestion

Our population is set to increase by 239,000 in just 15 years. And that inevitably means more pressure on our already-struggling road network.

The realities of growth and development are keenly felt in Robina and Varsity Lakes which sits at the geographic heart of the Gold Coast.

It is vital government and the private sector work together to deliver the infrastructure we need to support jobs and growth while protecting the enviable lifestyle we all expect and deserve.

Following the adoption of the City Budget 2016-17, Council will inves...

An investment of $3 billion by ASF Consortium to create a landmark casino resort is a major step in the continued evolution of the Gold Coast as a world-class city, says the Gold Coast Central Chamber of Commerce.

The Chamber has welcomed the proposal by ASF which will also deliver significant benefits to one of the city's most popular theme parks, Sea World.

"The Gold Coast has been hungry for a major development of this scale for some time," says Chamber President Peter Yared.

Invitation 2016 Gold Coast Small Business Forum

Running a small business is challenging. There are constant demands on your time and often only you to make things happen. However, it can also be very rewarding.

Between managing staff, ordering stock, and chasing new clients there is often little to no time to keep up-to-date with changing government policies affecting your business.

Last week the Turnbull Government introduced a very important piece of legislation during the first sitting week of the 45th Parliament.

The Coalition's Ten Year Enterprise Tax Plan wil...

The Gold Coast may be undergoing a new development boom, but according to the Gold Coast Central Chamber of Commerce (GCCCC) the inner city is at risk of grinding to a halt due to rising traffic stress points across the city.

GCCCC President Peter Yared says Chevron Island arguably creates the biggest traffic bottleneck on the Coast at peak times and this is now spilling over to Isle of Capri's eastern entry.

"I'm not telling anyone anything new here, but the problem has become more acute in recent years," says Mr Yared.

With the first stage of Queensland's new lock-out laws in effect, the Gold Coast Central Chamber of Commerce (GCCCC) believes it is important that Gold Coast city leaders are able to judge their success with hard data.

That is why the GCCCC has joined with Surfers Paradise Alliance (SPA) and Griffith University to fund a research project that will complete a 12-month review of the impact of the lock-out laws.

The Government can't be trusted to report on the effectiveness of the lock-out laws. During the public consultation, it skewed the results to back its own position a...

Over the past month, we've seen more bad news for the Queensland economy under the current Government after they delivered a failed State Budget for 2016-17.

The State Budget is just another example of an asleep at the wheel Government failing to get the basics right. Since this Government was elected, I have put forward a number of projects that would have made my electorate a better place to live and work, including M1 upgrades, anti-hooning measures, environmental clean ups, flashing school zone lights and more funding for domestic violence.

These projects were ignored in ...

                Divisional budget protects local lifestyle

As a new Councillor, providing input into the City Budget 2016-17 was an overdue opportunity to secure a better deal for Robina, Varsity Lakes and Burleigh Waters and better value for everyone.

Spending in our local area has focused on rebuilding arterial roads, reducing traffic congestion, and improving safety for all road users.

Importantly, our local budget marks a return to 'getting the basics right' by funding, for the first time, programmed maintenance of our waterways and boosting street sweeping in areas of high demand.

Queenslanders have been left in the dark because of the Palaszczuk Government's inaction leading up to changes to the retail electricity market on July 1, despite promises of a 'public communication campaign' from Annastacia Palaszczuk.

Labor's reckless decision in 2015 to delay the LNP's plan to deregulate the electricity market in South Easter Queensland has cost families hundreds of dollars.

Their feeble excuse at the time was that a public communication campaign was required to prepare Queenslanders for the change but after nearly 18 months Labor has done ...

My focus now is working with my colleagues to deliver responsible, stable government that provides the certainty we need for economic growth that will foster business success.

With the federal election creeping closer, the Gold Coast Central Chamber of Commerce has made note of a number of issues it sees as priorities for the incoming government.

On July 2, Australians will go to the polls to vote for leaders and it is important to ensure the right representatives are elected to ensure not only the Gold Coast, but Queensland and Australia continues on a trajectory of success.

The Gold Coast is represented by four members that cover the areas of McPherson, Moncrieff, Fadden and Forde.

While each candidate has a differing agenda, it is important that...

ON the back of the announcement this week about the minimum wage rise, the Gold Coat Central Chamber of Commerce says it so time to seriously consider reducing penalty rates on the weekend.

President Peter Yared says although it is great to see Australia's $1.8 million lowest-paid workers awarded a minimum wage raise of $15.80 a week, this could negatively impact some business owners and says reducing penalty rates on the weekend could combat the issue.

"While the $15.80 a week pay rise may not seem significant, for larger businesses that employ hundreds of staff it can ...

Construction Industry is vital to building a Stronger Economy

The Coalition Government has been rock-solid on the need to re-establish the Australian Building and Construction Commission (ABCC) as an industry watchdog. It is a key part of our plan to build a stronger economy.

We went to the last election promising to do so, and this election it is even more critical. The Senate's failure to pass this crucial legislation has necessitated the double dissolution election so we can work to deliver this reform as promised.

ABS data released just this week confirms Austra...

The Gold Coast is a small business city, with our lifeblood being the tourism and construction industries.

It's important these industries continue to get stronger in order to drive jobs and growth on the Gold Coast. This is precisely why the Turnbull Coalition Government has a national economic plan to drive investment, boost export opportunities, grow tourism, and ensure there is confidence in our construction industry.

Backing small business is a key part of this plan, because we know small business drives the national economy.

That's why, last year, the Turnbull C...
