This week I launched the China-Australia Year of Tourism, a Coalition initiative taken together with China that celebrates our relationship and recognises the significance of the Chinese tourism market to Australia. This campaign will drive further growth in our largest tourism market and the Gold Coast stands to reap the benefits.
As the primary economic driver for many of our city's small businesses, there should be a lot of optimism in the local business community about the year ahead.Indeed just last month, the latest Sensis Business Index revealed confidence among Australia's small and medium enterprises has lifted eight points to a net balance of plus 46.
The survey of Australian businesses found there are four times as many businesses confident about business conditions, compared to those which are worried. This result confirms the bright future for business under a Coalition Government committed to supporting and encouraging the growth of small businesses.
As part of this commitment, the Turnbull Government last year established the Australian Small Business and Family Enterprise Ombudsman, providing access to advice and support. After consulting widely on the issues affecting small businesses last year, the Ombudsman is seeking feedback on small business payment terms and times.
Small business owners on the Gold Coast tell me cash-flow and payment terms are among the biggest issues they face. The Ombudsman's inquiry into late payments and other adverse payment practices will help strengthen the sector into the future.
I understand cash-flow is king for small business and I want to ensure payment terms are fair. If you have time, please complete the short survey to help me learn what is most important to you.
The survey is open until the end of the month and can be accessed here: http://asbfeo.gov.au/inquiries/payment-times-and-practices/business-survey.
