It is only one month since my last communication and I cannot believe how swiftly change has occurred on every level in our community with the unprecedented and rapid spread of covid-19.
This pandemic has to date not only significantly impacted the economy and population of our great country but also decimated the local Gold Coast tourism industry and related business, hotels, cafes, restaurants, conference facilities, resulting in the closure of most businesses other than essential services like supermarkets and pharmacies. The Australian Government is sending a very strong message of support for businesses as well as employees and has followed up with innovative initiatives to support and sustain both during this incredibly challenging and unpredictable environment. Please check the link below for the most current Australian Government business information and support.
The Morrison Government's Business Hotline - 13 28 46 has been expanded to provide specialist advisers and extended hours to support small and medium businesses impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. This hotline is available seven days per week and calls are answered from 7:00am to 11:00pm AEST.
Boosting Cash Flow for Employers: Tax free payments of up to $100,000 will be made to eligible businesses with a turnover of under $50 million, to provide temporary cash flow support to businesses that employ staff. This will work by giving eligible businesses that withhold tax to the ATO on their employees' salary and wages a payment equal to 100 per cent of the amount withheld. Eligible businesses that pay salary and wages will receive a minimum payment of $20,000. Payments will be made automatically on lodgement of activity statements. This measure will benefit around 690,000 businesses employing around 7.8 million people.

Also, the ATO has set up an Emergency Support Infoline - 1800 806 218. The Infoline provides tailored advice to support small business who may be having difficulties meeting their tax and super obligations.
There are two calamities occurring around the world with this pandemic. The first obviously is the devastating health outcomes resulting in multiple deaths. Hopefully the health crisis will be contained over the next 6 to 9 months. The second calamity is the economic one which will take years to recover from. We all need to pull together including governments, landlords, tenants, employees and investors to make sure we come out of this crisis as quickly as possible.
